If you have a plumbing, electrical or refrigeration apprentice, you need to know this.

The Certificate III qualifications are changing; this means that your apprentice will need to be transitioned across to the new qualification. Not only will your apprentice learn about the latest changes in technology, industry practices and licensing, PEER will make sure you are ready to go with this new transition.

What does this mean for your apprentice?

  • The CPC32413 will be transitioning to the CPC32420 – Certificate III in Plumbing
  • The UEE30811 will be transitioning to the UEE30820 – Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
  • The UEE32211 will be transitioning to the UEE32220 – Certificate III in Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration

PEER has an open and flexible approach towards this transition and will work alongside employers, to minimise the effects that it will have on the apprentice and the employer.

As part of the transition there may be a requirement for your apprentice to undertake ‘Gap training’ the difference between the old and new qualification. If this is the case for your apprentice, PEER will be flexible in providing continuous gap training days to minimise lost time. This is to ensure apprentices will return to their normal scheduling as quick as possible.

PEER can structure a flexible learning plan that is built around your work schedule.

For more information about enrolling your apprentice at PEER’s trade school visit peer.com.au/apprenticeship-training. Our open enrolment timetable means you can transfer and sign up your apprentice with PEER at any time, from anywhere.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Customer Service Team at PEER on 08 8348 1200 or customerservice@peer.com.au.

tradie2trainer Program https://peer.com.au/tradie2trainer-program/ Wed, 23 Nov 2022 10:39:54 +0000 https://peer.com.au/?p=31964

In 2021-22, South Australia’s construction industry saw an increase in enrolments for the following qualifications:

  • Certificate III in Electrotechnology – Electrician – 8%*
  • Certificate III in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration – 6%*

As apprentice numbers are increasing, demand for trainers and assessors in the RTO sector has also increased.  PEER is working alongside CITB to provide a study and employment pathway for tradespeople interested in transitioning from working ‘on the tools’ to a trainer role at no cost to the tradesperson.

We offer trainers the flexibility of working full-time, part-time or casually, allowing them the option to continue working in their trade or to run their business while working at PEER.

To be a trainer and assessor at PEER, you will need:

  • Certificate III or equivalent qualifications in electrical, plumbing, construction, data or mechanical engineering with a current Australian license;
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessing (TAE) or a commitment to obtaining this qualification; and
  • On-the-job experience in your chosen trade.

PEER is committed to providing a genuine employment pathway for tradespeople currently working on the tools, and can offer several options during the transition process:

  • Employment at PEER as a Subject Matter Expert on either a casual or permanent basis whilst completing the TAE;
  • A gradual transition from part-time or casual employment to full-time employment to enable tradespeople to wind up a small business; or
  • Remaining employed as a tradesperson and partnering with PEER to gain experience in the classroom to complete the relevant practical components of the qualification.  Employment may be offered on completion of the TAE.

Trainers can work in a variety of areas including VET in Schools, Certificate III qualifications and non-accredited courses and upskilling programs.

To find out more about becoming a trainer or to arrange a time to experience the PEER Training Way, please contact Tina Fahy (HR Coordinator) at tinaf@peer.com.au

Pathway to Success in Plumbing Industry https://peer.com.au/pathway-to-success-in-plumbing-industry-01/ Fri, 25 Feb 2022 03:50:29 +0000 https://peer.com.au/?p=30755 PEER’s vocational high school programs are a great way to start a trade career while completing SACE.
For students seeking to take the vocational training pathway, PEER offers programs in electrotechnology, electronics, plumbing and engineering.

One popular program is the plumbing pathway to an apprenticeship. Students with an interest in plumbing can undertake a Certificate II in Plumbing (Pre Apprenticeship) while at school. This contributes to their SACE completion. Students will engage in new skills that can be used later in their career and in a workplace setting which may increase employment opportunities as an apprentice.

https://peer.com.au/vet-in-schools/

Once they have completed the high school plumbing program, students may go on to apply for PEER’s pre-apprenticeship program.
Providing they pass all of the necessary entry requirements, students may be accepted into the free 8 week program which teaches the necessary skills required to transition quickly into a trade. With a 2-week work experience placement included, participants learn first-had insights into their chosen career pathway and can decide whether it is the right choice for them.

With the program teaching valuable industry skills, this can significantly improve their changes of obtaining an apprenticeship.

The feedback from learners completing this free course is generally positive and although PEER cannot guarantee employment at the end of their course, many go on to obtain an apprenticeship.
That is not where it ends for the apprentices who will then go on to attend PEER for trade training and learning at their Albert Park trade school.

The PEER training way encourages apprentices to be the best versions of themselves and to become the most outstanding tradespeople in the industry.

NEW TRAINING PACKAGES ANNOUNCED FOR 2022 https://peer.com.au/new-training-packages-announced-for-2022/ Thu, 27 Jan 2022 02:43:33 +0000 https://peer.com.au/?p=30659 TRANSITIONING TO A NEW TRAINING PACKAGE AT PEER

From the beginning of 2022 our Certificate III qualifications are gradually changing to new qualifications.

• The UEE30811 will be transitioning to the UEE30820 – Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
• The CPC32413 will be transitioning to the CPC32420 – Certificate III in Plumbing
• The UEE32211 will be transitioning to the UEE32220 – Certificate III in Air-Conditioning & Refrigeration
• The UEE30411 will be transitioning to the UEE30420 – Certificate III in Data & Voice Communications

All Apprentices enrolled in the current Certificate III qualifications, will need to be transitioned across to the new qualifications unless they can be completed before the due date in July 2022.

Why are these changes being made?

With the changes in technology, industry practices, and licensing requirements, the new training packages will better prepare our apprentices both from a technical and safety perspective.

How will it affect our apprentices enrolled in the old package?

We wish to minimise the impact of this on our apprentices and employers. Our Training Team have been working diligently to develop a transition plan for every apprentice based on their current progress and expected date of completion.

Each apprentice will receive a letter outlining their transition date in 2022 ( if required ) and how the transition impacts their apprenticeship and what they will need to do. If you do not attend these trade school dates it WILL affect your ability to complete the required training before the qualification transition deadline you may be required to extend your apprenticeship.

Also attached will be a statement outlining any outstanding units. For any units that an apprentice has attempted but is not deemed competent in, we strongly advise to contact customer service as soon as possible to arrange the unit/ units to be completed before your class transition date.

All enquiries about the transition can be directed to PEER Customer Service at customerservice@peer.com.au

Every little bit helps to support our MATES in Construction https://peer.com.au/every-little-bit-helps-to-supporting-our-mates-in-construction/ Fri, 17 Dec 2021 05:41:12 +0000 https://peer.com.au/?p=30619

As one of the largest employers of Apprentices in the construction industry, we are committed to assisting with the mental health of our apprentices both on and off the job. Our partnership with Mates In Construction and the vital work they do for mental health in the construction industry is of paramount importance to us.

We are a huge supporter of the connector work that MATES In Construction deliver to our apprentices and staff and show our support by holding fundraising events throughout the year to raise money for their ongoing programs.

Events include a casual day on the last Friday of the month, where staff out of uniform are encouraged to donate a gold coin to MATES. Electrical Trainer and Assessor Michael Gaczol is the founding father of the Casual Day Authorisation Committee and is key to drumming up support for donations, which PEER matches dollar for dollar. In addition to casual day we raffle items such as shopping vouchers, bottles of wine and gift hampers that staff donate.

Our 10 cent deposit container bins located all around PEER, are another way we raise money throughout the year for MATES and every September on “Fly The Flag Day” a BBQ held at PEER encourages all staff, apprentices and trainees to check up on each other and ask RUOK? Many a snag is eaten, provided by our onsite Xpress Café with all proceeds going to MATES.

Incredibly we have already raised $8555.81 this year and will continue to raise money for our MATES year on year for the important training and support they provide.

It really goes to show that every little bit helps throughout the year to raise money for the important work the connectors are doing at MATES.

Big savings on the cost of engaging an apprentice! https://peer.com.au/big-savings-on-the-cost-of-engaging-an-apprentice/ Mon, 08 Nov 2021 02:41:47 +0000 https://peer.com.au/?p=30195 The Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements (BAC) wage subsidy supports businesses to take on new apprentices and trainees, to build a pipeline of skilled workers to support sustained economic recovery.
Through the subsidy, any business that engages an Australian Apprentice between 5 October 2020 and 31 March 2022 may be eligible for a subsidy of 50 per cent of wages earned (not charge rates to host employer) by the new or recommencing apprentice or trainee for a 12-month period (from the date of commencement), to a maximum of $7,000 per quarter.
After 12 months of this support employers will be eligible to transition to the time-limited Completing Apprenticeship Commencements (CAC) wage subsidy for the second and third years of an apprenticeship. Under the CAC, eligible employers will receive a 10 per cent wage subsidy in the second year of an eligible apprenticeship, up to a maximum of $1,500 per quarter per apprentice, and a 5 per cent wage subsidy in the third year of their apprenticeship, to a maximum of $750 per quarter per apprentice.
The BAC and CAC are available to employers of any size, industry or geographic location.
Subsidies are processed as part of a Federal Government claim by PEER. Once the payment has been received by PEER it will be added to your account as a credit note (for PEER host employers). Subsidy processing is completed in arrears at the end of each quarter.
From 1 July 2020 the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program (AAIP) was scheduled to be replaced with a new, simplified and streamlined incentives program for employers of apprentices and trainees, the Incentives for Australian Apprenticeships (IAA).
However, due to the extension of the Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements Wage Subsidy to 31 March 2022 as announced in the 2021-22 Budget the Government has further revised the implementation schedule of the IAA.
The IAA will now commence from 1 July 2022.

Start an Apprenticeship or Traineeship Today https://peer.com.au/start-an-apprenticeship-or-traineeship-today/ Mon, 19 Apr 2021 09:24:16 +0000 https://peer.com.au/?p=29524

With South Australia leading the nation in the number of people commencing trade apprenticeships, there has never been a better time to start a trade apprenticeship or business administration traineeship.

The September 2020 quarter National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) data released last week shows South Australia was the only state or territory to increase the number of apprentices and trainees in-training, with a 7.8% increase, compared to the previous year.

Trade occupation commencements in South Australia also increased by 2.5%, the only increase in the nation.

PEER has witnessed first-hand the increase in apprentice and trainee commencements, including the recent sign-up of the first Certificate III in Business Trainee for BHP Olympic Dam. PEER is proud to partner with BHP, who last year announced their commitment to train 3,500 new Australian apprenticeship and training positions.

Highly regarded for delivering leading training solutions, PEER has a profound history of delivering national accredited training including training over 3,500 apprentices and trainees. With its PEER Academy model, PEER ensure apprentices and trainees are trained, mentored, coached and supported both as professionals and as individuals.

PEER CEO Peter Nolan says it’s an exciting time for PEER as demand for its quality training solutions continues to grow.

“PEER is partnering with BHP to provide a customised workforce solution through traineeships and apprenticeships. It is a great achievement for PEER to be recognised by the largest company in Australia as leading in traineeships and apprenticeships. Already we are growing this relationship and exploring new opportunities that will benefit BHP and South Australian workers,” says Peter.

BHP Olympic Dam Asset President Jennifer Purdie said: “We are committed to providing apprenticeships, skills and training opportunities for South Australians of all ages and all walks of life, particularly in our regional communities.

“We want to establish pathways into our company and industry for people who may not have previously considered a career in mining. Investing in sustainable entry level positions creates a pipeline of future talent in highly skilled roles, in an industry that delivers essential products and keeps the South Australian economy strong.”

Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said: “An apprenticeship gives you a great opportunity to learn real skills in the workplace, earn a nationally-recognised qualification and be paid a wage while you learn.

“With the Australian and South Australian Governments providing significant skills and training incentives, including a 50% wage subsidy up to $28,000 for 12 months for eligible employers, there has never been a better time to take up an apprenticeship or traineeship.”

Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements Wage Subsidy https://peer.com.au/boosting-apprenticeship-commencements-wage-subsidy/ Tue, 13 Oct 2020 05:56:31 +0000 https://peer.com.au/?p=10761 PEER WELCOMES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S ANNOUNCEMENT OF WAGE SUBSIDIES TO HELP 100,000 NEW APPRENTICES AND TRAINEES

The Federal Government has announced it will spend an additional $1.2 billion to encourage businesses to hire 100,000 new apprentices and trainees. Under the ‘Boosting Apprenticeships Commencements’ subsidy, businesses that hire a new apprentice or trainee will qualify for a 50% wage subsidy.

The new subsidy came into effect from 5 October and is available to all businesses, regardless of size, industry or geographic location and is capped at 100,000 places. For eligible employers, the new subsidy will cover 50% of the wages of a new or recommencing apprentice or trainee to the value of $7,000 a quarter, for the period until September 30, 2021.

The new subsidy will provide significant employment opportunities for those thinking about a trade career and commencing an apprenticeship or traineeship. As the 2020 South Australian Training Provider of the Year winner, PEER is well equipped to assist employers who are thinking of hiring an apprentice or trainee. With a 94% completion rate and 98% of graduates employed upon completion, PEER is one of the largest employers of apprentices and trainees in South Australia.

As a Group Training Organisation, PEER makes the process of hiring a new apprentice or trainee easy and hassle-free while providing additional support and benefits. PEER encourages employers who are considering taking on an apprentice or trainee to act quickly as the subsidy is capped at 100,000 places.

Increased Support for VET Sector https://peer.com.au/increased-support-vet-sector/ Sun, 05 Apr 2020 23:15:59 +0000 https://peer.com.au/?p=10241 Welcomed support for the VET sector with announcement of funding package.

PEER commend the Marshall Liberal Government who recognise the vital importance of maintaining a strong vocational education and training (VET) system in South Australia.

In response to COVID-19, the government has released a funding package to support the VET sector. The aim is to enable the sector to maintain viability and continue to build training capability in South Australia.

Minister Pisoni has announced a $16m VET Market Continuity package. This includes a subsidy for a period of three months until June 2020 and a $4 million investment that enables training providers to put in place new delivery models and technology to support training, students and employers. The VET Market Continuity Package is in addition to the already announced State and Commonwealth Government stimulus and support packages, including the $1 billion South Australian Jobs Rescue Package and the more than $200 billion Australian Government package for businesses to manage cash flow challenges and retain employees.

PEER CEO Peter Nolan applauded the government for their action and support so that we can maintain a strong VET sector in South Australia in response to COVID-19.

“PEER has already implemented remotely delivered training to our VET in Schools students who will continue to learn in online classes and many of our apprentices. This funding ensures that we are confidently able to continue to support our apprentices and students over the coming months.”

“This is great news for those students that need to continue their studies to achieve their SACE and for apprentices who need to continue learning to complete their apprenticeship. I want to thank Minister Pisoni and the Department of Innovation & Skills for this important initiative”.
